The Greene County Ram softball team fell to South Hamilton in a game riddled with Ram errors. The team righted itself to finish the week with three victories. They also registered two wins and one loss in the South Hardin tournament played on Saturday.
The Rams are 13-12 overall, 5-7 in Heart of Iowa Activities conference action as of June 25. Saydel leads the league with a 10-1 record. Collins-Maxwell-Baxter is close behind at 12-2.
Regional tournament action starts next week. This year the Rams will be competing in Class 4A. They meet Perry on Thursday, July 7, in Perry at 7 pm. Greene County lost to the Blue Jays 9-0 on June 7. Perry is 15-9 on the season. The winner will take on Norwalk on Saturday, July 9, in Norwalk.
SH 12 ~ GC 1
Errors cost Greene County a victory Monday, June 20, as the Rams lost 12-1 in seven innings Monday night in Jefferson to South Hamilton (Jewell).
The Hawks scored eight times in the first inning, aided by four Ram errors. They added two runs apiece in the third and seventh innings for a total of 12.
The only Greene County run came on a first inning homer by Sydney Koch, her third of the season. She leads the team in that category. In addition, Megan Durbin doubled; Megan Carey hit two singles; and Carleigh Paup, Samantha Hardaway and Hannah Promes hit one single apiece. The Rams struck out 11 times.
Promes suffered the pitching loss. She allowed 12 runs on 10 hits, walked one, hit one batter, and had four strikeouts. Five of the Hawks’ runs were earned. The Rams were charged with six errors while the Hawks had one.
GC 6 ~ MNWW 0
Greene County scored four runs in the first inning and two in the fourth to sail past non-conference foe Manson-Northwest Webster 6-0 on Tuesday, June 21, in Manson.
Promes pitched a fine game, allowing only two infield singles while striking out three batters and walking none.
The Rams tallied 12 hits. Koch hit a two-run home run, her fourth of the season. She also had an infield single. The only other extra base hit for the Rams was a Jenna Beyers’ double. Promes singled three times and drove in two runs while Tieryn Tucker rapped a pair of infield base hits and drove in a run. Carey singled twice; Durbin had a single and and RBI, and Samantha Hardaway had a base hit.
GC 9 ~ Nevada 6
Nevada lit up the scoreboard with four big runs in the first inning against Greene County on June 22. The Rams retaliated with seven runs in the second. They added two runs in the fifth and sixth innings while the Cubs scored twice in the sixth, giving GC a 9-6 victory.
Promes went the distance on the mound, giving up six runs on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Koch led the offense with two singles and a home run for two RBIs. Hardaway cracked a solo home shot. Beyers drove in two runs on a double and single. Carey stroked a two-run single and Paup, an RBI single. Promes and Laurin Lyons each added a base hit.
GC 11 ~ St Edmond 5
Three runs in each of the first two innings gave Greene County a 6-0 advantage over St Edmond (Fort Dodge) on June 23. The Gaels cut the lead with three runs in the third. The Rams plated three runs in the fifth and St Edmond added two for a 9-5 Greene County lead. The Rams added two insurance runs in innings six and seven for an 11-5 win.
Promes was the winning pitcher. The Gaels picked up five runs on eight hits. Promes fanned three batters.
GC bats were swinging as the Rams collected 15 hits. Koch drove in two runs on a double and single. Promes added a run on a double and single. Paup and Beyers plated two runs on two base hits apiece. Izzy Bravard rapped an RBI single. Carey, Tucker and Lyons each tallied two base hits.
SOUTH HARDIN TOURNAMENT
Greene County traveled to Eldora for the South Hardin Tournament on Saturday, June 25. They went 2-1 on the day, defeating South Hardin and Iowa Falls-Alden. They lost to Interstate-35 6-3.
GC 15 ~ South Hardin 7
In a game lasting just four innings, Greene County toppled the hosts, South Hardin, 15-7. The Rams took an 8-2 lead in two innings. Each team added a run in the third. GC broke the game open with six runs in the fourth. Four runs by South Hardin was too little, giving the Rams a 15-7 victory.
Promes pitched the first three innings, giving up three runs on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts for the win. Beyers tossed the final inning, allowing four runs on three hits. She issued no walks and struck out one.
Paup had the big bat, recording three runs on a home run, double and single. Koch rapped a double and single to drive in a run. Beyers added a base hit. Promes, Durbin Laurin Lyons were each credited with an RBI.
GC 6 ~ Iowa Falls-Alden 0
Promes turned in a fine pitching performance in a 6-0 shut out against Iowa Falls-Alden. The junior pitcher gave up just three hits in the five-inning game and two strikeouts.
The Rams had one run cross the plate in innings one and two and added four in the fifth for the victory.
Greene County put 10 hits in the field. Beyers stroked a two-run double. Durbin plated a run on a double and two singles. Koch and Lyons each rapped an RBI single. Paup added a triple and single while Promes had two base hits.
Interstate 35 6 ~ GC 3
Greene County fell 6-3 in a five-inning game against Interstate-35. The Roadrunners sent two runners across the plate in each of the first three innings for a 6-0 advantage. The Rams put three runs on the board but fell 6-3.
Promes and Beyers shared pitching duties. Together they gave up six runs on five hits, walked five and struck out one. Promes suffered the loss.
The Rams tallied just five hits. Paup cracked a rwo-run home run. Carey, Koch, Promes and Faith Davis launched base hits but were unable to plate any runs.
